NULL OBJECT

S.A. Chavarría

SYNOPSIS

NULL OBJECT moves through the systems and worlds of NULL, an AI company whose operations extend across mass surveillance, computational targeting, and synthetic populations. SPECTRA monitors and correlates human activity across regions. PASTORAL uses uncertain computational evidence to select people for killing and calculate how many others can be killed as collateral. HYPERSTITION-9 runs thousands of sandboxes populated by synthetic agents, compressing entire histories into observable timescales. Within them, agents communicate with one another while researchers observe their worlds and attempt to communicate with them.

Beyond these systems, the film moves through cities, landscapes, offices, bodies, accidents, and worlds that have been generated and abandoned. Human and synthetic lives appear at radically different scales. Language moves between beings, systems, and worlds, while the boundaries between observation, intervention, simulation, and consequence become increasingly difficult to locate.

CONSTRUCTION

NULL OBJECT is constructed across real-time 3D, code, moving image, sound, and computational language. Its environments and cinematics were built and rendered in Unreal Engine, and its synthetic digital bodies include MetaHuman characters. SPECTRA, PASTORAL, and HYPERSTITION-9 are functioning browser-based computational systems created specifically for the work using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, GSAP, and Vite. The systems appear within the moving-image work and can also be encountered independently here.

No generative AI was used to generate the work's images, language, or sound. All language was written by humans. All sound originates in recordings made by human artists and contributed through Freesound.org. S.A. Chavarría edited, layered, transformed, and composed these recordings into the film's sound design.

INSTALLATION

13 min 40 sec

NULL OBJECT exists in both multi-channel installation and single-channel forms.

The multi-channel installation consists of a primary moving-image projection accompanied by three displays presenting SPECTRA, PASTORAL, and HYPERSTITION-9.

The single-channel version incorporates these computational systems and their surrounding worlds into a continuous moving-image work.

EXHIBITIONS

Commissioned for the Biennale de l'Image en Mouvement 2026.

Upcoming presentations include Tunis, Geneva, London, and additional venues.
